HOW TO SPOT RICES?

When you are standing in front of shelves packed with different bags of rice, it can be hard to know which one is truly the best. While price and packaging can give hints, quality rice has a few clear signs you can look for. Here is a simple guide to help you choose rice that cooks well, tastes great, and nourishes your family.

1. Check the Grain Shape & Size

Different types of rice have different shapes—long-grain, medium-grain, or short-grain. But within each type, look for grains that are uniform and thickness. Consistency usually means better milling and higher quality.

2. Look for Minimal Broken Grains.

A few broken grains are normal, but too many can affect cooking quality. For example, rice with lots of broken pieces often turns mushy when cooked. Choose bags where most of the grains look whole and intact.

3. Notice the Colour:

White rice should be bright and clear, not dull or yellowish. Brown, red, or black rice should have a rich, natural colour with no pale or faded spots. Discoloration can indicate age, poor storage, or low quality.

4. Check the Aroma:

Quality rice often has a natural fragrance—even before cooking. For example, basmati and jasmine rice are known for their aroma. If rice smells musty, stale, or chemical-like, it may be old or poorly stored.

5. Test the texture after cooking.

If possible, try cooking a small batch before committing to a big bag. Good rice should Cook evenly. Retain its shape without becoming too sticky (unless it is supposed to be sticky). Taste fresh and slightly pleasant or nutty, depending on the variety.

6. Check the Packaging:

High-quality rice is usually sold in sealed, sturdy packaging that protects it from moisture, insects, and dust. Avoid bags with holes, tears, or signs of pests. Vacuum-sealed packs are a good sign of freshness.
